Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals With Disabilities (VESID)

Apply for Services

Vocational rehabilitation is a process that involves an application for services, eligibility determination, vocational counseling and the development of an Individual Plan for Employment (IPE) to provide services leading to employment. Attending an orientation session is usually the first step in the application process. If you have any medical information to document your disability such as diagnosis, prognosis and limitations, please bring that information with you to orientation.

  • In Rochester, orientations are held every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. at 109 Union Street, 2nd floor.  A sign language interpreter is available at the 1:15 p.m. session.  No appointment is needed.  Please be on time.  The orientation is approximately one hour.  If you arrive late, you will need to attend the next session.  If you have questions, please call 585-238-2900 and ask for Intake.
  • Orientations in Geneseo are held every first and third Wednesday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in the Livingston County Government Center, 6 Court Street, Room 106.  No appointment is needed.  If you have questions, please call Brenda Rowell 585-238-2973.
  • The Geneva Satellite office offers orientation sessions every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.  No appointment is necessary.
  • Orientations are also offered on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the Ontario County Workforce Development Office, located at 3010 County Complex Drive, Canandaigua, NY 14424. The Workforce Development Offices have moved to the first floor (same building). When you turn into the County Complex, proceed to the first building on your right and go in the door by the 3 flagpoles. Proceed to the 2nd floor. Orientation is approximately 45 minutes. No appointment is necessary, applicants may call ahead at 585-396-4020. On the day of orientation please be sure to inform the receptionist that you are there for the VESID orientation.
  • For orientation in Penn Yan, contact Randy Lincoln 315-536-5140.

If you have any questions about the Geneva, Canandaigua, or Penn Yan orientations, please call Joan Sunday at (315) 789-0191, or Cheryl D'Eredita at (315) 789-0195.

During the group orientation, we will give you an overview of the VESID program, which will cover such topics as:

  • The Mission of VESID
  • How one becomes eligible for services
  • VESID's goal of employment
  • Medical assessments
  • Confidential Health Questionnaire
  • Types of services Available
  • Economic need
  • Consumer rights and responsibilities
  • The Client Assistance Program (CAP)
  • The appeal process
  • Next steps in the rehabilitation process

After the group session of the orientation is completed, if you are interested in following through with your application, you will be given forms necessary to apply for VESID services. You can complete these forms at that time or take them with you and mail them in later. Assistance will be provided if you have questions or concerns regarding the paperwork. If you do not have medical reports with you or if additional information is needed, we will give you the necessary medical forms you will need to have completed by your doctor. If you cannot get a report which describes your disability, VESID will arrange for evaluations needed to determine eligibility. Once we have the necessary information, you will be notified by letter what the next step in the rehabilitation process is.
